SEATTLE, WA (April 24, 2013) – Patriotism will be in full swing as USO Northwest hosts the 18th Annual 'Red, White & Blue Golf Classic, Dinner and Auction,' May 21 at The Golf Club at Newcastle. The Golf Classic is the Northwest's premier golf tournament and auction benefiting USO Northwest and local active-duty military, military families and veterans.

Girl Scout Cookies
On March 25, 2013 the USO Northwest Shali Center received 131,592 boxes of Girl Scout cookies from the Girl Scouts of Western Washington. Seven semi-trucks were used for the delivery and 100 airmen helped unload the delicious cargo. Thank you Girl Scouts! These cookies will be distributed through our centers and Mobile Canteen to service members and their families.

Showing enduring support, racing in the Atacama Desert
Starting March 3, USO Northwest Board Member Kyle McCoy competed in a 7 day, 150 mile, self-supported foot race in the Chilean Atacama Desert. His goals were to finish in the top 10 and raise $10k-$20k for the USO Northwest. Kyle came in 5th place overall, with a total time of 29:15:44, and through generous support $20k was raised for the USONW. Thank you to all who donated and thank you Kyle for your enduring support.

Over $35,500 raised for USO Northwest
Merrill Gardens presented a $35,615.27 check on February 6, 2013 to the USO Northwest. The money was donated by their residents throughout Washington State. The residents of the Kirkland Merrill Gardens raised $6,100 which is the highest amount raised of the 22 locations and the second highest total for the 54 Merrill Garden Centers nationwide.
The start of No Dough Dinners
The USO Northwest served the 62nd MED-BDE a free dinner on January 14 �the day before pay day. Service members enjoyed open-faced roast beef sandwiches, mashed potatoes, green beans and ice cream sundaes. The dinner was made possible because of the generous donation by Kathryn Fies. No Dough Dinners will be held on the 14 of every month in 2013.

Welcome Home Celebration
On January 11, 2013 the USO Northwest, Alaska Airlines and the Port of Seattle held a surprise welcome home celebration for SPC Chris Anderson. He was injured in June, 2012 after stepping on an IED during a routine patrol in Afghanistan. He lost his leg, below the knee, and his right leg was severely injured. Chris spent months away from family and the brothers he served with to recuperate at Walter Reed Hospital. United Through Reading with Petty Officer 2nd Class Jared Newlove
The United Through Reading program provides deploying military members an opportunity to read a children’s book aloud while they are recorded on DVD. The DVD and book are then mailed to the family at home once the deployment is underway. The UTR program is available at all USONW Centers and through the Mobile Canteen. Here is an example of the power of this program.
